Minimum car insurance requirements in Missouri

All motor vehicles operated or parked on Missouri roadways are required to be insured. Proof of insurance must be carried in your car at all times and must be available when:

  • Requested by law enforcement

  • Renewing vehicle registration

  • The vehicle is involved in a car accident

The minimum liability insurance requirements for private passenger vehicles in Missouri are:1

  • $25,000 per person for bodily injury

  • $50,000 per accident for bodily injury

As a major part of your liability insurance, bodily injury coverage covers medical bills for people other than the policyholder who are injured during an accident. Missouri is an at-fault state, meaning the driver who is responsible for the collision is also responsible for paying for any resulting expenses, either through their car insurance provider or out of pocket.2

  • $10,000 per accident for property damage

If it’s determined that an insured driver is at fault for an accident, this coverage pays for repairs to the property of the other involved parties. Additionally, property damage coverage can cover legal costs if the insured driver is involved in a lawsuit following the accident.

  • $25,000 per person for uninsured/underinsured motorists

  • $50,000 per accident for uninsured/underinsured motorists

Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage pays for costs caused by a driver with little or no insurance after a car accident. In Missouri, this coverage is required for bodily injuries.

Missouri DMV information

The Missouri DMV is run through the Department of Revenue.3 Drivers can find helpful information and services at DMVs throughout the state. But many locations have different hours, so check availability before you visit.

You can also access services online. From the website, you can personalize, reserve, and renew license plates, renew your drivers license, find a safety inspection station, and pay license reinstatement fees.4

Public transportation in Missouri

St. Louis, Kansas City, and other urban metros in Missouri have robust public transportation networks, along with regional transit systems in several areas of the state. However, the state’s 48 largest cities have a Walk Score of 30.5 With a score that low, getting around without a car in Missouri is difficult. Most errands will require access to a vehicle.

Tips for getting cheap car insurance in Missouri

Car insurance is a necessary cost when you own a vehicle, but shopping around can help you save money. Several quote-comparison websites let you compare car insurance from multiple insurers at once. When you check rates from several car insurance companies, you can quickly find the best policy at a price that fits your budget and ensure you’re getting the best deal available.

Liability-only vs. full-coverage insurance in Missouri

If you live in Missouri, you can opt to carry liability-only auto insurance, which pays for expenses related to injuries and damage to the other party’s car if you cause an accident. Each state sets its own minimums for how much liability insurance it requires drivers to carry. Liability-only insurance can make sense if:

  • You have a low-value vehicle.

  • You can afford to repair or replace your car out of your own pocket.

  • Getting the cheapest insurance possible is your top priority.

In Missouri, state minimum liability insurance also includes uninsured motorist coverage, which kicks in when you get into an accident with a driver who either doesn’t have insurance, or doesn’t have enough insurance to cover the damages they’ve caused.

For a higher level of protection, you can choose full-coverage insurance, which includes basic liability plus collision and comprehensive coverage. Collision coverage pays for damages to your car, even if you’re at fault for an accident. Comprehensive coverage pays for damages caused by events out of your control, like vandalism, theft, weather, and damage caused by animals. Auto lenders and leasing companies typically require drivers to carry full coverage on a car they’ve financed.

You may also opt for full coverage if:

  • You have a high-value vehicle.

  • You wouldn’t be able to afford to repair or replace your car out of pocket.

  • Your car’s actual cash value (the payout you’d likely get if your car is totaled) exceeds your annual premium to carry full coverage.

Here’s a look at the average monthly quotes for the cheapest auto insurance in Missouri by policy type.

How your driving history affects Missouri car insurance rates

Driving history is a crucial factor when it comes to car insurance costs. The more accidents or violations you have, the more likely the insurance company will consider you a higher-risk driver. High-risk drivers pay more for premiums. But good driving habits, such as following traffic laws and having no accidents or violations on your record, can help lower your car insurance rates.

Check out the table below for an idea of how much Missouri drivers can expect to pay for car insurance based on their driving record. These quotes are sourced from Insurify’s database of more than 70 million car insurance quotes, as well as third-party datasets from Quadrant Information Services.

SR-22 insurance in Missouri

An SR-22 is an insurance form you can get from your insurance company. It offers proof that you’re carrying the required liability insurance for your vehicle.6 The state could require it for two to three years if your license was suspended.7

How credit scores affect Missouri car insurance quotes

Car insurance companies in Missouri consider your personal credit history when deciding whether to issue you auto insurance and how much to charge. A low score could cost you — insurers often charge more or deny coverage altogether for drivers with poor credit. If you have an average score or higher, your credit score could qualify you for lower rates.

The table below shows the average monthly quote offered to Missouri drivers based on their credit score. This data is provided through Insurify’s proprietary database of more than 70 million car insurance quotes.

Quotes for younger drivers

Young drivers, especially those under the age of 25, have the least amount of experience on the road and are considered more risky to insure than other age groups. As such, insurers tend to charge young drivers higher rates. In the table below, you can get an idea of how much insurers charge young Missouri drivers for car insurance, based on their driving record and the type of policy they purchase.

Missouri car insurance FAQs

Here are answers to some commonly asked questions about car insurance in Missouri.

  • USAA topped the list for the cheapest car insurance in Missouri, at $82 per month on average. State Farm and Travelers also came in as the top three most-affordable companies. You may only find a liability-only policy in that price range if you’re a young driver. But the average driver can often find full-coverage car insurance that falls within the lowest rates.

Besides being one of the best and cheapest insurance companies, Travelers had the lowest cost across multiple age groups. It’s the cheapest for young and middle-aged drivers looking for full coverage or minimum coverage. Travelers also has the best rate for drivers after an accident or DUI.

  • Missouri has seen some of the biggest rate increases in car insurance, with premiums rising 56% since 2016. Distracted driving and speeding, which can lead to serious accidents, contribute to higher insurance costs.8 The state ranks 29th for moving violations, with nearly 20% of Missouri drivers having an accident or other driving incident on their record.

The weather also plays a role in increased car insurance rates. Missouri is home to several natural disasters, including flash flooding, straight-line winds, severe storms, and tornadoes — all of which can cause damage to vehicles that the insurance company must cover.9

  • The average cost of car insurance in Missouri is $228 per month, based on Insurify’s research. This is a 155% increase from 2019, according to average premiums reported by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. Compared to just five years ago, Missouri drivers are paying 2.7 times as much for auto insurance.10

The state ranks 31st for the cheapest car insurance, but drivers typically pay more in Missouri compared to neighboring states. Iowa drivers pay 42% less, Illinois drivers pay 23% less, Nebraska drivers pay 13% less, and Kansas and Arkansas drivers pay 6% less for car insurance.

  • Cost is a significant factor in determining Missouri's best car insurance companies. But you must also consider other factors, such as customer service, claims handling, and the company's financial standing. Based on that information, the companies with the top Insurify Composite Score score are Clearcover, USAA, American Family, and Nationwide.

J.D. Power also ranked USAA, American Family, and Nationwide among the top companies in its 2022 U.S. Auto Insurance Study for the central region, which includes Missouri.11

  • Missouri law doesn’t mandate PIP coverage, but Missouri insurers offer medical payments insurance or MedPay, which is similar to PIP coverage. It’s optional — state law doesn’t require you to buy coverage.12 But you might choose to add MedPay to your policy for added protection.

MedPay covers medical expenses after an accident. You can choose coverage from $1,000 to $10,000 to help pay for medical bills that aren’t covered by your health insurance.13 It can include deductibles, co-insurance amounts, ambulance bills, prosthetics, and more. MedPay is a type of no-fault coverage that pays whether you were at fault or not.

  • If you own a motor vehicle, you must have liability insurance coverage and carry proof of insurance with you in your car. The minimum required liability coverage protects against bodily injury and property damage costs inflicted on other parties in an accident you’ve caused. Bodily injury covers an injured person’s pain and suffering, medical bills, and lost wages. Property damage covers another person’s building, fence, or other property.

Missouri state law has a minimum required insurance coverage similar to neighboring states. It includes $25,000 per person ($50,000 per accident) for bodily injury and $25,000 per accident for property damage. You must also have uninsured motorist coverage of $25,000 bodily injury per person ($50,000 per accident).

  • In Missouri, car insurance follows the car. When you buy a policy, it covers the vehicle, others named in the policy, family members living in the same household, and any other person you give permission to drive the car.14 Your policy may also cover accidents in a rental car.

If you borrow your friend’s car and get into an accident, your friend’s insurance coverage will cover you even if you don’t have your own insurance coverage.15 But you could face severe penalties if you drive your vehicle (or let someone else drive your car) without the minimum coverage required by the state.

  • Full coverage in Missouri describes a policy that offers more than the state’s minimum liability coverage. It typically includes collision, comprehensive, and PIP coverage, which isn’t legally required, in addition to the state-mandated coverages for bodily injury, property damage, uninsured motorist, and PIP (or MedPay).

Premiums are more expensive for full-coverage policies. But it can be worth it if your car is less than 5 years old and has a value that’s more than the cost of your full-coverage policy. It may not be worth the extra expense if you drive a car with a low value.
