To calculate the Insurify Composite Score, a proprietary rating, Insurify data scientists weigh multiple factors that reflect the quality, reliability, and health of an insurance company.

Minimum car insurance requirements in Oklahoma

Oklahoma requires insurance for all motor vehicles operated or parked on state roadways. You must carry proof of insurance in your car at all times and make it available when:

  • Requested by law enforcement

  • Renewing vehicle registration

  • The vehicle is involved in a car accident

The minimum liability insurance requirements for private passenger vehicles in Oklahoma[2] are:

  • $25,000 per person/$50,000 per accident for bodily injury: As a major part of your liability insurance, bodily injury coverage covers medical bills for people other than the policyholder who are injured during an accident. Oklahoma is an at-fault state, meaning the driver who is responsible for the collision is also responsible for paying for any resulting expenses, either through their car insurance provider or out of pocket.

  • $25,000 per accident for property damage: If it’s determined that an insured driver is at fault for an accident, this coverage pays for repairs to the property of the other involved parties. Additionally, property damage coverage can cover legal costs if the insured driver is involved in a lawsuit following the accident.

Oklahoma DMV information

To drive legally in Oklahoma, you must meet guidelines set by the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety. You can utilize this organization to get your driver’s license, title, registration, license reinstatement, and more. While you can complete many of these services online, local offices are available for you to visit across the state. You can schedule an appointment online.[3]

Public transportation in Oklahoma

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT)[4] runs EMBARK, which offers 23 bus routes, river ferry transit, the OKC streetcar, ADA paratransit service, and bikeshares in the Oklahoma City Metro area.[5] While some larger cities also have their own transit systems, public transportation isn’t widely available in rural areas. Cars are the primary mode of transportation for Oklahoma residents.

Tips for getting cheap car insurance in Oklahoma

One of the easiest and most reliable ways to find affordable car insurance is to compare quotes from multiple insurers online. Comparison shopping is crucial because auto insurance providers offer different rates based on driver history, vehicle type, age, and more.

Here are some other ways you can lower your insurance rates:

  • Increase your deductible

  • Utilize discounts, such as safe driver or loyalty discounts

  • Bundle two or more policies

  • Maintain a good credit score

Liability-only vs. full-coverage insurance in Oklahoma

If you live in Oklahoma, you can opt to carry liability-only auto insurance, which pays for expenses related to injuries and damage to the other party’s car if you cause an accident. Each state sets its own minimums for how much liability insurance it requires drivers to carry. Liability-only insurance can make sense if:

  • You have a low-value vehicle.

  • You can afford to repair or replace your car out of your own pocket.

  • Getting the cheapest insurance possible is your top priority.

For a higher level of protection, you can choose full-coverage insurance, which includes basic liability plus collision and comprehensive coverage. Collision coverage pays for damages to your car, even if you’re at fault for an accident. Comprehensive pays for damages caused by events out of your control, like vandalism, weather, and animals. Auto lenders and leasing companies typically require drivers to carry full coverage on a car they’ve financed.

You may also opt for full coverage if:

  • You have a high-value vehicle.

  • You wouldn’t be able to afford to repair or replace your car out of pocket.

  • Your car’s actual cash value (the payout you’d likely get if your car is totaled) exceeds your annual premium to carry full coverage.

How your driving history affects Oklahoma car insurance rates

Your driving history is the factor that most influences your car insurance costs. Good drivers — whose records are free of serious traffic violations like speeding tickets or reckless driving — tend to get the best car insurance rates in Oklahoma. But infractions like driving under the influence or at-fault accidents can significantly increase insurance costs.

Here’s a look at average monthly quotes for the cheapest car insurance in Oklahoma based on driving and accident history.

SR-22 insurance in Oklahoma

An SR-22 is a form that a car insurance company completes on behalf of a policyholder to show financial responsibility. Although Oklahoma doesn’t require this form, many states require an SR-22 to reinstate a driver’s license after a suspension for a DUI or other serious offense. Instead, as a driver in Oklahoma, you’ll need to get an active insurance policy that meets the minimum requirements in the state.

How your city affects Oklahoma insurance quotes

The city you live in also will influence your car insurance rates in Oklahoma. Busier cities, like Oklahoma City and Tulsa, tend to have more traffic and accident claims, so premiums in those cities are often higher than rates in smaller cities. Here’s what drivers pay on average in some of the most populated cities in Oklahoma.

How your age affects your Oklahoma car insurance rates

Because insurers generally equate age with experience level, your age will significantly affect how much you pay for car insurance. New drivers, who tend to be teens or people in their early 20s, typically pay more for insurance than drivers 25 and older.

The following table gives a high-level view of how age can affect insurance rates.

Quotes for younger drivers

Multiple other factors influence how much drivers in each age group will pay for car insurance. Some increase rates for one age group more than another, while others impact all age groups evenly. Like in most states, teenagers and drivers under 25 pay the most for car insurance due to a lack of driving experience, which insurers see as a risk.

The following table compares how different insurance factors affect average monthly rates for drivers younger than 30. Progressive offers some of the most affordable rates, with an average of $158 per month for liability-only coverage.

Oklahoma car insurance FAQs

  • The insurer offering the cheapest full-coverage car insurance policy in Oklahoma is State Farm, with average quotes of $74 per month. Other comparable car insurance companies with affordable rates include USAA and Allstate, at $96 and $115 per month, respectively. Smaller and more regional insurers, like Eries and Traders, offer average premiums lower than $135 per month.

By coverage level, State Farm provides the cheapest quotes for minimum- and full-coverage insurance policies. USAA offers the cheapest average quotes by driver history for those with a clean record, speeding ticket, DUI, or at-fault accident. When factors like driving history and coverage level are broken down with age, Travelers and Progressive have the cheapest rates.

  • Oklahoma is the 14th-safest state for driving in the country. That said, around 15% of drivers in the state have a recent incident on their record, and the state ranks second in the country for the number of suspended licenses. The frequency of severe offenses associated with license suspension may result in statewide cost increases as auto insurers assess risk levels.

Because state weather conditions, among other location-based factors, influence how auto insurers assess risk in a state, Oklahoma’s position in Tornado Alley is relevant. In 2021, for example, the state recorded 63 tornadoes.[6] The frequency and related destruction from tornadoes increase the likelihood of policyholders filing more claims.

  • The average cost of car insurance in Oklahoma is $206 per month, according to Insurify data. This is lower than the national average of $233 per month. Oklahoma is the 24th-cheapest state for purchasing car insurance. Car insurance is cheaper than in Kansas and Colorado but more expensive than in New Mexico.

Costs fluctuate in Oklahoma and other states, making it important to shop around and compare quotes often. For example, between July 2021 and July 2022, average rates in Oklahoma increased by 28%, according to our data. As insurance companies continue to react to industry conditions and supply chain issues, some providers might implement changes.

  • The car insurance companies in Oklahoma with the highest ICS rankings and cheapest rates include Travelers, Liberty Mutual, and Clearcover. Their average monthly quotes are $142, $285, and $160, respectively. To find the best auto insurance provider for your unique budget and needs, be sure to shop around and compare all your options.

The companies mentioned above all have good financial strength ratings. Travelers has an A++ from A.M. Best and an AA from both Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s. Liberty Mutual earned an A from A.M. Best, an A2 from Moody’s, and an A from Standard & Poor’s. Lastly, Clearcover has an A- from A.M. Best but hasn’t been ranked by Moody’s or Standard & Poor’s.

  • Oklahoma doesn’t require personal injury protection (PIP) coverage. In fact, the coverage type isn’t even available for purchase. If you’re interested in a similar coverage for your medical bills that applies even if you’re at fault for an accident, MedPay coverage is likely the best option.

Though not required, MedPay coverage can cover medical expenses and funeral costs that result from an accident, no matter who’s responsible for it.

  • Yes. The state of Oklahoma requires that all drivers carry at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident in bodily injury liability coverage, as well as $25,000 in property damage liability coverage. Driving uninsured is considered a misdemeanor. If you’re caught, you’ll be fined and face license suspension. And you’ll have to pay to reinstate your license.[7]

Bodily injury coverage applies to the medical bills of people other than the policyholder injured in an accident or other incident. Similarly, property damage coverage goes toward the costs of repairing the property of the other parties involved in an accident. In some cases, property damage coverage also kicks in if a lawsuit results from an accident.

  • In Oklahoma, the car owner’s insurance follows the car, as long as the owner grants the driver permission to drive it. If the owner doesn’t have liability insurance, it’s the driver’s legal responsibility to carry their own liability insurance when operating the vehicle. Collision and comprehensive coverage will always apply because they’re linked to the vehicle.[2]

You should never let an unlicensed driver operate your vehicle for safety reasons and to avoid any legal and financial consequences.

  • Full-coverage insurance in Oklahoma is usually defined as a policy that provides more than the state’s minimum liability coverage, which is $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident in bodily injury coverage and $25,000 in property damage coverage. A full-coverage policy in Oklahoma also includes collision and comprehensive insurance.

Liability insurance covers costs related to bodily injury and property damage of others involved in an accident you're responsible for. Collision coverage applies to your vehicle and necessary repairs if it’s damaged in a car accident. Comprehensive coverage covers non-collision-related damages to your car from natural disasters, theft, vandalism, and more.
